AutoCAD Certification: Exams, Cost and How to Prepare (2026)
Autodesk offers two AutoCAD certifications: the entry-level Autodesk Certified User, a 50-minute exam delivered through Certiport, and the Autodesk Certified Professional in AutoCAD for Design and Drafting, a 120-minute exam with 45 to 60 questions at a US$200 standard retail price. This guide covers the format, cost, where to sit it, renewal and preparation — and, from Render a House, how to show the design skills a certificate does not.

Quick answer
Quick answer: AutoCAD certification means one of two Autodesk exams. The Autodesk Certified User (ACU) exam in AutoCAD is entry level, lasts 50 minutes and is booked through Certiport ($94 voucher in the US store). The Autodesk Certified Professional (ACP) in AutoCAD for Design and Drafting lasts 120 minutes, has 45 to 60 questions, costs US$200, is taken at a Pearson VUE center or online, and is valid for 3 years. All figures checked October 2026.
Updated October 2026.Every exam fact on this page comes from Autodesk's own certification pages — the certification overview, the AutoCAD ACP page and the certification policies — or from Certiport, the testing partner Autodesk sends Certified User candidates to. Where neither publishes a figure, the page says so.
Render a House is not part of the exam and not a CAD tool. It is an AI rendering tool for architects and real estate: you upload a PNG or JPG export of an AutoCAD drawing, a sketch or a 3D model and get a presentation render in the browser, which is the half of a student portfolio a CAD certificate does not cover.
Which AutoCAD certifications does Autodesk offer?
Autodesk runs four certification levels across its products: Certified User, Certified Associate, Certified Professional and Certified Expert, per the Autodesk certification overview. For AutoCAD, the architecture, engineering and construction certification page lists two of them: an Autodesk Certified User exam in AutoCAD and the Autodesk Certified Professional in AutoCAD for Design and Drafting. No Associate or Expert exam for AutoCAD is listed there (checked October 2026).
| Certification | Aimed at | Experience suggested | Exam length | Delivered by | Valid for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Autodesk Certified User (ACU): AutoCAD | Entry level; secondary and early college students | About 150 hours of Autodesk software experience (Certiport) | 50 minutes | Certiport (Pearson VUE) | 5 years (Certiport) |
| Autodesk Certified Professional (ACP): AutoCAD for Design and Drafting | Working drafters, designers and graduates | About 400 to 1,200 hours of real-world AutoCAD use | 120 minutes, 45 to 60 questions | Pearson VUE test center or OnVUE online | 3 years; retest to renew |
Rows per the Autodesk AEC page, the ACP page, Certiport's Autodesk overview and Certiport's certification expiration policy. The two exams are run by different organizations, booked through different accounts and governed by different retake rules, so treat them as separate products rather than steps on one ladder.
What is the Autodesk Certified User exam for AutoCAD?
The Autodesk Certified User exam in AutoCAD is the entry-level credential. Autodesk's overview describes the Certified User level as foundational, for secondary students and non-English speakers, and the AutoCAD exam validates foundational skills such as creating or plotting drawings, editing objects and working with layouts, per the AEC certification page, which lists it as a 50-minute exam.
Selecting an ACU exam on Autodesk's site sends you to Certiport, where sign-up and scheduling happen, per the overview FAQ. Certiport says the ACU certifications suit candidates with about 150 hours of real-world Autodesk software experience, per its Autodesk overview, and its exam releases page shows the AutoCAD ACU exam available in English (US) and twelve other languages, including Spanish (Mexico), Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Japanese and Korean (checked October 2026).
The number of questions and the passing score on the ACU AutoCAD exam are not published on the pages above (checked October 2026). Certiport publishes the ACU AutoCAD objective domains; read that list before booking.
What is the Autodesk Certified Professional in AutoCAD for Design and Drafting?
The Autodesk Certified Professional in AutoCAD for Design and Drafting is the credential most job listings mean by "AutoCAD certified." Its certification page lists the details below (checked October 2026):
- 120-minute exam time.
- US$200 standard retail price.
- 45 to 60 questions.
- Exam and proctor available in English.
- Certification valid for 3 years.
- Retesting is required to renew the certification.
Autodesk says candidates typically need approximately 400 to 1,200 hours of real-world AutoCAD experience. The exam objectives (December 2025) put that as working with AutoCAD regularly for at least two years, and state that the skills apply to AutoCAD-based applications, including AutoCAD LT. There is no prerequisite certificate: you do not need the ACU first.
What does the ACP exam cover?
The objectives document splits the exam into five weighted domains, per the ACP exam objectives PDF. Authoring and editing drawing content is the largest share.
| Exam domain | Share of exam | Examples from the objectives |
|---|---|---|
| Application and drawing management | 22% | Layers and layer filters, named UCS, Properties palette, MEASUREGEOM, COUNT, AUDIT/RECOVER and purge |
| Design annotation and detailing | 20% | Text, dimension, multileader and table styles; annotative scaling; tables |
| Author and edit drawing content | 29% | Blocks and attributes, WBLOCK, Blocks palette, clipboard, arcs, polylines, offset and precision editing |
| Configure and manage design output | 16% | Layouts, viewports, plotting and other output files |
| Collaboration | 13% | Xrefs and underlays, design sharing and markup tools, external design data |
The listed prerequisite skills read like a description of everyday drafting: apply drafting standards, set up workspaces, navigate and organize drawings, reference external files, create and modify geometry with precision tools, annotate, collaborate and produce layouts and prints. If those are part of your weekly work, the exam is mostly about naming the right command and option under time pressure.
What is the exam format?
Autodesk's Pearson-hosted exams are selected response, and you do not have access to AutoCAD while answering, per the FAQ on the ACP page. Five question types are used:
- Multiple choice: a question with several possible answers.
- Drag and drop: select and reposition answer options within a list or graphic.
- Active screen: interactive images of the software interface.
- Hot area: select the right region of an exhibit.
- Graphic interpretation: read a graphic and interpret it.
Results are pass or fail. Autodesk says passing scores vary by exam and are not disclosed before you sit it, so the passing score for the AutoCAD ACP is not published (checked October 2026).
How much does AutoCAD certification cost?
The AutoCAD certification cost depends on the level. Autodesk lists standard retail prices of US$150 for Associate, US$200 for Professional and US$250 for Expert exams, with prices set by country or region and taxes added in some places, per the overview FAQ. For AutoCAD, only the Professional tier applies. Certified User vouchers are sold by Certiport, not on Autodesk's price list.
| Item | Published price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ACP exam: AutoCAD for Design and Drafting | US$200 standard retail price | Autodesk ACP page |
| ACU exam voucher (US Certiport store) | $94 | Certiport store |
| ACU exam voucher with retake (US) | $113 | Certiport store |
| CertPREP practice tests for ACU, single title (US) | $40 | Certiport store |
| ACU voucher + retake + CertPREP bundle (US) | $141 | Certiport store |
| Autodesk ACP prep course (self-paced, 7 hours) | Price not shown on the course page | Autodesk Learning |
Certiport store prices are for the United States; vouchers bought through Autodesk are tied to the country of purchase, per the voucher terms. Schools and training centers often buy vouchers in bulk: Autodesk Learning Partners can provide vouchers for groups, per the overview, so ask your department before paying retail. AutoCAD itself is a separate cost; see AutoCAD pricing for the subscription, and check AutoCAD system requirements before practicing on an older laptop.
Where do you take the AutoCAD certification exam?
The Professional exam is taken in person at a Pearson VUE testing center or online through Pearson OnVUE, per the ACP page. Autodesk requires ID verification and proctors monitor every exam. Online candidates should run Pearson's system check and read the proctoring requirements for the room before booking.
The Certified User exam is scheduled through Certiport, which delivers it through Certiport Authorized Testing Centers — many of them schools and colleges. Ask your school whether it is a testing center before buying a voucher.
How do you get AutoCAD certified, step by step?
For the Professional exam, the process on Autodesk's site is, per the overview FAQ:
- Open the AutoCAD for Design and Drafting certification page and select Get certified.
- Sign in with your Autodesk Account, or create one.
- Fill out and submit the exam application.
- From your Certification Dashboard, schedule an appointment at a Pearson testing center or online, and pay.
- Bring or show proof of identity at exam time.
For the Certified User exam, pick the AutoCAD ACU on Autodesk's site, follow the link to Certiport, create a Certiport account and schedule with a testing center there.
What happens if you fail, and how do you renew?
Retake and renewal rules differ between Autodesk (for the Professional exam) and Certiport (for the Certified User exam), per Autodesk's certification policies, Certiport's retake policy and Certiport's expiration policy.
| Rule | ACP (Autodesk / Pearson VUE) | ACU (Certiport) |
|---|---|---|
| After the first failed attempt | Reschedule immediately, subject to appointment availability | Wait one day (24 hours) |
| After the second failed attempt | Wait three days (72 hours) | Wait five days (120 hours) |
| Each later attempt | Three-day wait each time | Five-day wait each time; no annual limit |
| Validity | 3 years for the AutoCAD ACP | 5 years for Autodesk Certified User |
| Renewal | Apply within six months before expiry, pass before the expiry date; no grace period | Not published (checked October 2026) |
To renew the ACP you submit a new application within the six months before the expiry date, then schedule, buy and pass the exam before it expires. There is no grace period after the expiry date. Certiport also notes that a purchased ACU retake voucher must be used within 60 days of the failed exam.
How should you prepare for the AutoCAD exam?
The most direct prep for the Professional exam is Autodesk's own AutoCAD for Design and Drafting Professional Certification Prep course: self-paced, listed at 7 hours, with lessons, a downloadable dataset, exercises and a practice test you must pass with 75% or more to complete the course. Autodesk says it was built for the December 2025 and later version of the exam. For the Certified User exam, Certiport sells CertPREP practice tests and partner courses in its store.
A preparation plan that follows the published objectives:
- Download the objectives PDF and mark every command you have never used — MEASUREGEOM, COUNT, SCALELISTEDIT, ATTSYNC, WBLOCK and RECOVERALL are all on the list.
- Spend time in proportion to the weightings: authoring and editing (29%) and drawing management (22%) are half the exam.
- Practice annotative scaling across several viewports until you can predict which scale representation shows where.
- Rehearse output: page setups, layouts, viewports and plotting, which is 16% of the exam and easy to neglect in student work.
- Work through xrefs, underlays and markup import on a shared set, because collaboration questions assume a multi-file project.
- Take the course practice test, then re-study the domains you missed before booking.
- Practice answering from memory. The exam gives you no software, so recognizing a dialog or option from a screenshot is part of the skill.
Is AutoCAD certification worth it for architecture students?
For architecture students, the honest answer is: it depends on the job you are applying for. A certificate is a standardized, verifiable signal that you know AutoCAD drafting conventions. It helps most where hiring filters on it — drafting and documentation roles, some public-sector and contractor jobs, and markets where employers ask for Autodesk credentials by name. It helps least at design-led studios, which hire mainly from the portfolio.
Signs the exam is worth the fee and the study time:
- Job listings you want mention AutoCAD certification or Autodesk credentials.
- Your school pays for vouchers or is a Certiport testing center.
- You already have the hours: the ACU suits about 150, the ACP about 400 to 1,200.
- You are switching careers and need proof of skill without a drafting job on your CV.
Signs to spend the time elsewhere: your target offices work mainly in Revit or Archicad, they ask for a portfolio and no credential, or your drawings already show AutoCAD fluency. Autodesk publishes no hiring or salary data for its certificates, so weigh it against the listings you actually see.
What should sit next to the certificate in a portfolio?
A certificate proves drafting knowledge; a portfolio proves design judgment, and reviewers read the portfolio first. Pair the badge with clean plans, sections and details drawn in AutoCAD, and with images that show what the building is like. That second part is where students lose the most time, and where Render a House helps: export a plan, elevation or 3D view to PNG or JPG, upload it, describe materials and light in plain words, and a render is ready in about 30 to 60 seconds, with no GPU and nothing to install.

The Free plan gives 3 credits a day at 1K with a watermark and no card; paid plans remove the watermark and add video. Estimate a semester of pin-ups with the render cost calculator, and read AI rendering for architecture students for the Student plan and how to label generated images, and how to build an architecture portfolio for layout and selection.
What can't an AutoCAD certificate prove?
An AutoCAD certificate proves you answered selected-response questions about AutoCAD correctly within a time limit. It does not prove design ability, knowledge of local building codes or construction detailing, BIM skills in Revit or Archicad, or speed on a real project set. It expires — 3 years for the ACP — and it covers one product.
Renders have limits too. A Render a House image is an AI interpretation of the view you upload: it produces images, not DWG files, layers, dimensions or anything that goes back into the drawing. Check proportions and details, label AI renders as such in academic work, and re-render when the design changes.
