Enscape vs V-Ray, compared

Enscape vs V-Ray for real-timecompared honestly.

Pick Enscape for a live, walkable view of the model inside Revit, SketchUp, Rhino, Archicad or Vectorworks. Pick V-Ray for physically accurate final images you light by hand. To turn a 3D model or a sketch into a render without a GPU, use Render a House in the browser.

3 renders a day. No plugin, no graphics card.

Enscape or V-Ray

The short answer.

Pick Enscape if you design in Revit, SketchUp, Rhino, Archicad or Vectorworks and want to walk through the model while you change it. Pick V-Ray if the job is a physically accurate final image and you will learn lighting and materials properly. Both are made by Chaos, both are plugins, and Solo costs $574.80 a year for Enscape and $540 for V-Ray.

If what you actually need is to turn a 3D model or a sketch into a render, Render a House is the alternative: upload a sketch or a GLB file in the browser and get a concept image in about 30–60 seconds, with no GPU and 3 free renders a day. Last updated: September 25, 2026.

Enscape strengths

Where Enscape is better.

Enscape’s case is speed of feedback: it shortens the gap between changing a design and seeing it.

It updates while you model

Enscape plugs into the CAD or BIM tool and live sync updates the render as you design. No export, no separate scene.

More Mac hosts

Enscape runs on macOS for Archicad, Rhino, SketchUp and Vectorworks, with the same licence as Windows. V-Ray’s Mac support is narrower and depends on the host.

Presentation formats built in

Walk, fly and VR modes, panoramas, web standalones and video come with the plugin, which suits weekly client reviews.

V-Ray strengths

Where V-Ray is better.

V-Ray’s case is control and accuracy, and it has been refined for almost three decades.

Physically accurate light

Chaos’s own FAQ puts it plainly: real-time engines use rasterisation to stay fast, while V-Ray is a ray tracer that simulates how light behaves.

No GPU required

V-Ray renders in CPU, GPU or hybrid mode, so a machine without a capable graphics card can still produce a final frame.

More hosts, and team licences

V-Ray plugs into 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, Maya, Blender and Houdini as well as the architecture tools. Premium and Collection are floating licences a team can share; Enscape’s plans are named.

Choosing between them

Which should you choose?.

Four common situations, and the tool that fits each one.

A practice reviewing designs every week

Enscape. The model is already open in Revit or SketchUp, and a live walkthrough answers design questions faster than a queued render.

A visualisation specialist delivering final images

V-Ray. The output is judged on light and material accuracy, and the time spent setting up a scene is the job, not overhead.

A Mac-based studio

Enscape, if you model in Archicad, Rhino, SketchUp or Vectorworks. V-Ray on a Mac works through SketchUp or Maya only.

No model yet

Neither. Both need a scene open in a host app. Render a House starts from a sketch or a plan and runs in a browser, with no GPU.

Render a House

Render a House, the alternative for 3D model or sketch to render.

Enscape and V-Ray render a scene inside a host app. Render a House skips the scene: it reads the image or model you already have and returns a concept render.

What you get

3D integration

Where SketchUp, Revit or Rhino exports a mesh, upload it and set the camera in the browser, then render from that view.

Rendering

Photorealism in seconds rather than a queued calculation you leave running over lunch.

Video

A camera move across the same project, generated from a finished still. Nothing to animate.

Design

Try materials, light and surroundings until the version you want exists, without touching the source model.

Refinement

Fix one part of a render — a facade panel, a tree, a sky — without starting the image again.

Precision

Your geometry is respected: the walls, openings, heights and proportions you drew in SketchUp, Revit or Rhino stay where you put them.

Collaborative

Share a link and take comments on the image itself, so feedback lands on the render rather than in an email thread.

Mobile and web

Runs in the browser, on the machine you have open, including a laptop that would struggle with a local render engine.

4K

Delivery resolution, ready to print or put on a board without a separate upscaling step.

Render a House is an AI rendering tool for architects, interior designers and real estate. Upload an exported view, a GLB or a photographed sketch, and a render comes back in about 30–60 seconds on any machine with a browser. Keep Enscape or V-Ray for the live walkthrough and the tuned final frame.

What Render a House cannot do.

  • Give you a live viewport. It returns a still image, or a short video made from one.
  • Produce measured drawings or BIM output. Geometry can shift, so check openings and proportions against the model.
  • Run inside Revit, SketchUp or Rhino as a plugin. You upload a view or a GLB, GLTF or OBJ file; .skp is not accepted.
  • Replace a tuned V-Ray final frame. It does not simulate light physically, so it is not for lighting studies.

The verdict

The verdict.

Enscape and V-Ray are two stages of one workflow, sold by the same company. Enscape is the better daily tool for feedback while you design; V-Ray is the better tool for the image on the cover. At $574.80 and $540 a year for Solo, your host app, hardware and deliverable will decide it, not price.

To get from a model or a sketch to a render without a GPU or a plugin, try Render a House first. It is free for 3 renders a day, so you can judge it before paying for a seat.

Common questions about Enscape vs V-Ray.

Is Enscape better than V-Ray?

Enscape is better for live design review, and V-Ray is better for final-frame realism. Many studios that can afford both use Enscape during design and V-Ray for marketing images.

Is Enscape free?

No. Enscape has a 14-day free trial, then Solo costs $574.80 a year, billed annually (checked Sept 2026). Verified students can get the Enscape Student Collection for $149 a year.

Does V-Ray run on Mac?

Only through some hosts. V-Ray for SketchUp and V-Ray for Maya support macOS, while V-Ray for Rhino, Revit and 3ds Max are Windows-only. Enscape covers more Mac hosts.

Can I use Enscape or V-Ray without a 3D model?

No. Both render a scene open in a host app, so nothing renders until the model exists. Render a House can start from a sketch, a floor plan or a photo.

Do Enscape and V-Ray come in one subscription?

No. Enscape and V-Ray are sold as separate plans, even in their Collection tiers, so running both at Solo level costs $1,114.80 a year. The same Chaos login covers both.

What is the best alternative to Enscape and V-Ray?

For turning a 3D model or a sketch into a render, Render a House. It runs in any browser with no GPU, returns a concept image in about 30–60 seconds, and is free for 3 renders a day. It has no live viewport and no physically simulated light.

No GPU, no plugin? Render anyway.

Upload a sketch, a plan or an exported view and see what comes back in under a minute.
