Autodesk Desktop App vs Autodesk Access: What It Is and Whether You Need It

The Autodesk Desktop App was the Windows updater that shipped with AutoCAD, Revit and other Autodesk products. Autodesk retired it on March 15, 2023 and replaced it with Autodesk Access, which does the same job today: it lists and installs updates for the Autodesk products on your PC. This guide covers what Access does, whether you need it, how to remove or limit it, and the fixes for its most common problems — plus how to turn an exported view into a presentation render with Render a House, a browser-based rendering tool that works from images and 3D models.

Autodesk Desktop App vs Autodesk Access: What It Is and Whether You Need It

Short answer

Quick answer: Autodesk Desktop App no longer exists. As of March 15, 2023 it was replaced by Autodesk Access, a Windows app that comes with most Autodesk product installations, checks daily for updates and installs them. You do not need Access to run AutoCAD or Revit, and uninstalling it does not affect installed products, but without it you lose the built-in update list.

Sources: Autodesk's replacement notice, Autodesk Access Help and the uninstall impact article, checked October 2026.

What was the Autodesk Desktop App?

The Autodesk Desktop App (often shortened to ADA) was a background component installed alongside Windows-based Autodesk products. Per Autodesk's legacy "About" article (checked October 2026), it:

  • delivered product updates, new releases and security patches;
  • offered product downloads, subject to the permissions on your Autodesk Account;
  • showed update notifications from the Windows system tray;
  • was not available for macOS.

Autodesk's support noticeis explicit: "As of 15 March 2023, Autodesk Desktop App is no longer supported and has been replaced by Autodesk Access." Autodesk's launch post for administrators added that installing Access removes the Desktop App, so there is no separate ADA uninstall step. If an old guide tells you to download or repair the Desktop App, follow the Access instructions below instead.

What is Autodesk Access?

Autodesk Access is Autodesk's current desktop updater for Windows. Autodesk's help home describes it in one sentence: it "comes with most Autodesk product installations and keeps them up to date. It checks daily for updates, lists the ones that apply to you, and installs them in a few clicks." The product page is titled "Autodesk Access | Formerly Autodesk Desktop App".

In practice, Access is where you:

  1. See which updates and hotfixes apply to your installed products.
  2. Install those updates, if your account has install permission.
  3. Schedule updates, a feature added in the January 2026 release.
  4. Ask Autodesk Assistant questions or launch an installed product, added in the September 2026 release.

Release dates and features are from the Access release notes, checked October 2026. The system requirements list one line: Windows 10 or later.

Do you need Autodesk Access?

You do not need Autodesk Access to open or use AutoCAD, Revit or any other installed Autodesk product. Autodesk's support articlesays Access "is not part of any of the Autodesk products" and that uninstalling it "doesn't have any impact on Autodesk products which have already been installed" (checked October 2026).

How to uninstall Autodesk Access

The steps depend on your Access version. Autodesk's remove, hide or uninstall guide (checked October 2026) splits them as follows.

Access 2.x

  1. Open Windows Settings.
  2. Go to Apps.
  3. Find Autodesk Access in the list.
  4. Choose Uninstall and confirm.

Access 1.x

Access 1.x was part of Autodesk Installer, so it cannot be removed directly.

  1. Download Access 2.x from the Autodesk Access Help page.
  2. Install it as administrator.
  3. Open Windows Settings > Apps.
  4. Find Autodesk Access and choose Uninstall.

How to hide or limit Autodesk Access

Autodesk documents a per-user registry value for administrators who want to hide Access or stop users installing updates themselves. Per the disable-updates support article (checked October 2026):

DisableManualUpdateInstall values documented by Autodesk
Value (DWORD)Effect
1Access does not start with the device and its system tray icon is hidden; users can still open it from the Start menu
2Users still see available updates, but the Update button is hidden
  1. Sign in to Windows as the user you want to change.
  2. Open Registry Editor and go to HKCU\Software\Autodesk\ODIS.
  3. Create a DWORD named DisableManualUpdateInstall.
  4. Set its value to 1 or 2.

Registry edits affect the whole user profile; back up the key first. For many machines, Autodesk also describes Group Policy and logon script routes in the same article and in its Access support hub.

Common Autodesk Access issues

Most Access support threads come down to sign-in, missing updates or leftover services. Start with the fix that matches your symptom.

No sign-in page or it hangs

Autodesk's no sign-in page and sign-in hangs articles (checked October 2026) point to a corrupted Autodesk Identity Manager, a corrupted Access install, or a browser/WebView problem.

  1. Uninstall Autodesk Identity Manager from Settings > Apps.
  2. Reboot the computer.
  3. Reinstall Autodesk Identity Manager.
  4. Confirm Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is installed.
  5. If Access still shows a blank page, reinstall Access.
  6. If you see "Check your browser", change your default browser and try signing in again.

Updates missing or failing

Updates only install when your Autodesk Account allows you to install software; on managed accounts an admin may also have hidden the Update button with the value 2 above. The release noteslist several fixes for crashes and missing update lists, so update Access itself (in-app since the September 2026 release) before troubleshooting further. Autodesk's help has a dedicated troubleshooting section for missing updates, failed installs and connection problems.

Access services still running

After you uninstall the Access window, Windows services whose names start with "Access" may keep running. Autodesk notes this in its uninstall guide. Autodesk's launch post describes Access as a lightweight interface over its core installation services, so the services are expected and are not a sign the uninstall failed.

Rendering exported AutoCAD and Revit views

Access keeps AutoCAD and Revit current; it does nothing for presentation. If you need a client-ready image of a design, export it and render it in the browser with Render a House:

  1. Export a plan, elevation or 3D view from AutoCAD or Revit as PNG or JPG. PDF is not accepted, so export the sheet to an image first.
  2. Or export the Revit model as OBJ and open it in the Revit file viewer to pick a camera angle.
  3. Upload it to the AI architectural rendering tool and describe materials, lighting and setting in plain words.
  4. Get a render in about 30 to 60 seconds, then refine it.

The free plan gives 3 credits per day at 1K resolution with a watermark and needs no card; video is on paid plans. Estimate a project with the render cost calculator, or read the full AutoCAD to AI rendering workflow.

What Render a House does not do

  • It is not CAD or BIM software and does not replace AutoCAD, Revit or Autodesk Access.
  • It does not open DWG or RVT files; it accepts PNG, JPG and WebP images and SKP, GLB, GLTF, OBJ and STL models.
  • Renders are illustrative. Check dimensions, openings and materials against the drawings before sending one to a client.

FAQ

Is Autodesk Desktop App the same as Autodesk Access?

Autodesk Access is the replacement, not a rename of the same program. Autodesk says the Autodesk Desktop App has not been supported since March 15, 2023 and was replaced by Autodesk Access, which now handles product updates on Windows.

Can I uninstall Autodesk Access?

Yes. On Access 2.x, open Windows Settings > Apps, find Autodesk Access and choose Uninstall. Access 1.x cannot be removed directly; Autodesk says to install Access 2.x as administrator first and then uninstall it from Settings > Apps.

Will uninstalling Autodesk Access break AutoCAD or Revit?

No. Autodesk states that Access is used to install updates, is not part of any Autodesk product, and that uninstalling it does not affect Autodesk products that are already installed. You lose the in-app update list until you reinstall it.

Does Autodesk Access run on a Mac?

Autodesk lists Windows 10 or later as the operating system requirement for Autodesk Access, and the old Autodesk Desktop App was never available for macOS either.

Why does Autodesk Access show no sign-in page?

Autodesk lists three causes: a corrupted Autodesk Identity Manager, a corrupted Access installation, or a browser or WebView issue. The fix is to reinstall Autodesk Identity Manager, reboot, confirm Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is installed, then reinstall Access if needed.

How do I stop Autodesk Access from starting with Windows?

Autodesk documents a per-user registry value for administrators: DisableManualUpdateInstall set to 1 under HKCU\Software\Autodesk\ODIS stops Access starting with the device and hides the system tray icon. Users can still open it from the Start menu.

Can Render a House open DWG or RVT files?

No. Render a House accepts PNG, JPG and WebP images and SKP, GLB, GLTF, OBJ and STL models. Export an AutoCAD or Revit view to PNG or JPG, or export the model as OBJ, then upload that.
